The accompanying photo will be familiar to many.  It is an artwork called “Joy” or “N’Joy” by the artist Raphaël Laventure on open display on one of the peaks in the Tignes / Val d’Isere ski region.  The artist wants to deliver the message ‘Born to be happy’, and I definitely felt happy to be born when I saw it.

I’m for a few other mountains this weekend in the Pat Dunbar Mountain race.  One of them is called Tievedockaragh and must be the steepest I’ve come across.  I’m not expecting any artwork at the top, just the first checkpoint, along with the satisfaction that the first major climb is over, and that the next part will be downhill.

I will have five checkpoints on Saturday, or milestones to help get me to the end.  If they are set properly, milestones are brilliant but when achieved need celebrated.  On Saturday my celebration after checkpoint one will be charging down through the trees, before the climb in pursuit of the next checkpoint starts.

How do you celebrate your successes?

I run to get fitter and faster, to enjoy myself, and make new friends and lasting friendships at the same time.  I realized some time ago that the best way to achieve these goals is to have targets and milestones along the way, that keep interest levels high and provide a means of measuring progress.
