The Causeway's best kept secret
The Giant’s Causeway is so much more than a pile of stones.
This innocuous photograph is of the entrance to Portnoon Cave, along the coast from the main stones of the Giant’s Causeway, and well worth a visit. A few of us on a run from Portballintrae along the coast a couple of weeks ago stopped off there.
We had run down past the main stones (where I have to confess I have only ever been), up the very steep Shepherd’s Path and continued left along the coastline. It’s fantastic scenery along there.
Just a few miles in we left the main coastal route, went down a short but steep incline towards what looked like a much less exciting pile of stones. It was a bit of a hike down, however at the bottom we really did need to challenge ourselves to climb up and over some enormous boulders. Not for the faint hearted, the challenge was well rewarded when we entered Portnoon Cave. Walking into total darkness the sound of waves crashing all around us blocked out everything else. The further we went, the brighter and quieter it became as the light from the gap in the sea side filtered through creating a genuinely atmospheric effect.
