Feed your passions

As many of you know, in this part of the world it can be a beautiful summers day when you wake up and deepest, darkest winter by bedtime. On one such day…I decided to go for a toodle on my mountain bike.

I am extremely fortunate where I live in that my garden backs onto Crawfordsburn Country Park, and when I get round to converting my roof space, I’ll have a great view of Scotland over Helen’s Bay beach. From here it is a mere 5, sometimes muddy, miles up hill to the beautiful Helen’s Tower. You know it still amazes me how many people live in this area and still haven’t been up there. The tower itself is stunning and its remarkable what wildlife you can happen upon on the Ulster Way, and the rest of the path up to the tower, and the number of opportunities to take a different route up or back is endless.

That day I was briefly speaking to three people on horseback about half a mile from the tower, and when I reached it I met a man and his son who were also out on their mountain bikes. They weren’t familiar with the area (they lived c40 miles away), although had heard about it, and were amazed about how much there was to do.

They had been there for about 45 minutes and I could see that they were buzzing. They asked me which of the paths might be best, so I told them what my favourite routes were and about a couple of paths best avoided. Hopefully that will have helped them get the most out of their day.

It’s like when I feed my passions at track training on a Wednesday night. My running coach guides me because I know he has been there, done it and got the t-shirt.

So outside work, or inside work, do what drives your passion, what makes you buzz, or what makes you money…and when you’re ready, ask a coach or consultant for some advice about which direction might be best.
